All Souls Anglican Church
All Souls' Anglican Church needed new amenities for its parish and the wider community at St Peters
in Adelaide.
The building sits alongside a heritage church, which meant satisfying Heritage South Australia and
current accessibility standards at the same time.
Modus supplied a Yarra-3 with three cubicles and a service area, finished in a palette set by the
heritage approval.
A need the parish had carried for a long time
The amenities inside the church had been an issue for years. For a congregation that uses the site every week, the problem was practical rather than cosmetic, and the parish had wanted a dedicated building on site for a long time before the project went ahead.
Getting there meant working through the Parish Council, the Diocese, local and State planning, and Heritage South Australia. Modus issued elevation and floor plan drawings to support the development application, then reissued the design as renders in the final palette so the parish could see the building before it was built.
Two sets of rules, one building
Heritage South Australia directed Colorbond Manor Red across every external surface, including walls, columns, framing and roof, so the new building picks up the tone of the church's original brickwork rather than competing with it.
That created a problem. AS1428.1 requires at least 30% luminance contrast between a door and its surrounds so entries stay legible for people with low vision, and an all-red building would not have met it.
Colorbond Dune on the doors answers both. The red satisfies the heritage requirement, the doors deliver the contrast, and neither is compromised.
A trellis for a parish of gardeners
At the church's request, a custom planting trellis was added to the rear of the building. The parish does a lot of planting and gardening around the grounds, so letting greenery climb the structure and soften it over time was a natural fit rather than an add-on.
An outstanding result
A building that belongs to its setting, meets accessibility standards in full, and finally gives the parish the facilities it had been without.
"We have been very impressed with the quality of the building, and with the contractor who installed it. The attention to detail, and the communication with us throughout, were what set Modus apart. The finished product has exceeded our expectations."
Denise, Parish Project Coordinator, All Souls' Anglican Church
It was a pleasure working with All Souls' on this project. After years of making do, the parish now has amenities built for the way the site is actually used, finished to sit comfortably against the church, and ready to serve the congregation and the wider community for years to come.
