Murrays Beach in Booderee National Park is a remote, high-traffic destination where durability, sustainability and low-maintenance were non-negotiables. Total Project NT partnered with Modus to design two toilet buildings to serve the busy beach carpark—robust enough to resist vandalism, fit for an off-grid coastal site, and built to last. The brief evolved from a request for transportable buildings to a more permanent modular solution, driven by budget, site access, and performance requirements.

Challenges and Project Needs

  • Be resistant to corrosion from coastal exposure.
  • Offer strong security and anti-vandal features.
  • Operate sustainably, with no connection to mains services.
  • Be simple to maintain in a remote location.
  • Align with the visual identity of the national park and coastal area.

Our Solution

After working through multiple design iterations with the client, Modus delivered two Yarra 7 toilet buildings—customised for security, efficiency, and long-term coastal resilience.

Materials and Durability

We used fully galvanised stainless steel and Capral’s LocAl® Low Carbon aluminium for the external walls and privacy screens—an eco-friendly aluminium option that cuts carbon emissions by 50% and is made from recycled billet in Australia. Internal mini-orb walls were chosen for their vandal-resistant ribbed surface and ease of cleaning, and stainless steel fixtures further reduced maintenance needs.

Security and Safety

To ensure safety in a remote location, the buildings feature auto-locking doors for night-time security and motion-sensor solar lighting that supports CEPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) principles. Modular panels allow for quick, low-cost repairs, making the facility both secure and practical to maintain.

Fit and Finish

Each building includes four standard cubicles, one ambulant, and one accessible cubicle. The colours—Shale Grey walls and roof, Monument trims, and Surfmist doors—were selected to complement the natural tones of the park and surrounding landscape.

An Outstanding Result

The modular toilet and changing facility enhances Padua College’s sporting and recreational spaces, setting a new standard for school restroom and sports infrastructure. By incorporating safety-focused features, a durable structure, and an aesthetic that aligns with the school’s identity, the project successfully delivers a long-term solution for student welfare and facility management.
