Berowra Waters Marina is a high-traffic public open space that needed a modern amenity building to replace an ageing, non-compliant brick block. The Council required a durable, low-maintenance solution that met AS 1428.1 accessibility requirements, matched the site aesthetic, and could handle heavy daily use.

Challenges and Project Needs

  • High vandalism risk and frequent use in a waterfront setting
  • Old brick facility delivered a poor user experience and did not meet current standards
  • Need for a robust, low-maintenance public toilet design that blended with existing infrastructure
  • Full compliance with AS 1428.1 accessibility requirements

Our Solution

Design that fits the marina

  • Custom privacy screen in Pic-Perf with a subtle yachts motif, nodding to local boating culture.
  • Colour and finishes selected to align with surrounding structures, constructed in Corten powder coat for a warm, coastal look that remains cost-effective and corrosion-resistant.

Materials and build quality

  • Wood-look aluminium cladding and aluminium fascia planking provide the signature look while minimising maintenance.
  • Mini-orb internal walling for impact resistance due to ribbed surface and easy cleaning.
  • Stainless steel pans for durability and vandal resistance.
  • Ventilation gaps under walls, plus front louvres, to improve airflow and user comfort.

Accessibility and compliance

  • 2 Universal Access (UA) toilets with compliant grab rails, fixture heights, door clear openings, circulation space and signage.
  • 2 Ambulant-accessible toilets designed for people who walk and use mobility aids or handrails for support (e.g., crutches).
  • All layouts, hardware and fixtures checked against AS 1428.1:2021 for transfers, reach ranges, hardware locations and turning circles.

An Outstanding Result

The new amenity building delivers a safer, cleaner, and more welcoming experience for visitors. The prefabricated toilet construction and material palette reduce whole-of-life costs, while the marina-inspired Pic-Perf screen and cohesive colours tie the building into its natural setting. Hornsby Shire Council now has a compliant, durable facility from a full-service public toilet manufacturer that will serve the community for years to come.
