The Cranbrook Truck Bay Rest Stop serves as a vital hub for truck drivers and travellers navigating Western Australia's regional road network. Located in a remote area where mains services are unavailable, the site required a comprehensive solution that could operate independently whilst providing essential amenities for overnight stops. The Shire of Cranbrook partnered with Modus Australia to deliver a self-sufficient facility that would enhance driver safety and comfort along this important transport corridor.

Challenges and Project Needs

Remote roadside rest stops present unique design challenges. The facility needed to address vandalism and anti-social behaviour, as isolated locations lack the passive surveillance found in urban areas. The design required off-grid capability, as the remote location had no access to mains water, power, or sewerage. Minimal maintenance was critical, as every service visit to the site would be costly and time-consuming.
The facility needed to provide comprehensive amenities for truck drivers requiring shower facilities for overnight stays, as well as accessibility for all users including families. Unlike standard rest stop toilet buildings, this project required integrated shelter areas to provide protected spaces for rest and meals, creating a complete rest stop environment. The harsh environmental conditions of regional Western Australia demanded exceptional durability in materials and construction methods.

Our Solution

Modus Australia delivered a custom Atlantis toilet building with integrated shelter structures on both sides. The prefabricated modular design combines toilet facilities with sheltered areas and accessible table settings.
The facility includes one Universal Access Toilet, one ambulant toilet with handrails, and one standard toilet. For truck drivers making overnight stops, the building provides both a disabled shower and two standard showers with instantaneous gas hot water systems. Baby change tables accommodate families, whilst aluminium benches and clothes hooks provide changing areas and storage.

Off-Grid Capability

The facility operates completely independently of mains services. A holding tank with septic system manages waste disposal with periodic removal by vacuum truck. Solar panels with batteries and controller provide reliable power for all building systems. A solar-powered DC water pressure pump ensures consistent water pressure from the on-site 8,000-litre rainwater tanks. LED batten lights with motion sensors minimise power consumption whilst providing excellent visibility.

Vandalism Resistance

Mini-orb internal cladding with its ribbed profile resists impact damage and makes graffiti difficult. Stainless steel fixtures provide exceptional durability and easy maintenance. Solid core steel-clad doors resist forced entry, whilst an external control box allows maintenance crews to manage systems without entering the building.

Off-Grid Systems

The facility operates completely independently of mains services. A septic system with holding tank manages waste disposal. Solar panels with batteries provide reliable power for all building systems. LED batten lights with motion sensors minimise power consumption. A rainwater tank supplies water to the facility, supporting the shower systems and toilet facilities.

An Outstanding Result

The Cranbrook Truck Bay Rest Stop provides the Shire of Cranbrook with a durable, self-sufficient facility that serves road users whilst minimising ongoing operational costs. User reviews highlight the facility's cleanliness and comprehensive amenities, with travellers noting it as a "great place to stay for a night" with "clean showers and toilet facilities." The prefabricated modular construction enabled fast installation, whilst the integrated shelter design creates a cohesive rest stop environment that addresses the comprehensive needs of truck drivers and travellers on regional Western Australian routes.
