Rotary Park, Port Douglas

Modus replaced an Exeloo automated toilet at Rotary Park, on the corner of Macrossan and Grant Street in central Port Douglas, Far North Queensland.

The previous facility had been in service for over ten years.

For Douglas Shire Council, Modus supplied a Yarra-4 with service area, designed for a central park site with high tourist and visitor numbers.

What the council needed

Douglas Shire came to Modus needing to replace an automated Exeloo toilet that "due to age, wear and tear is not fit for purpose and has been in service for over 10 years". With the location of Rotary Park so central to Port Douglas, high visitor and tourist numbers meant the facility was not sufficient in the long run. While the automated toilet seemed like a great idea at first, it was unfortunately leading to high maintenance and cleaning costs and customer complaints.

Modus was tasked with replacing this with a more traditional prefabricated solution that reduced operational maintenance costs over the long term. The council also wanted the facility to fit in with the surrounding environment, incorporating a "tropical theme".

A building designed for the tropics

The council hoped the toilet building would fit the tropical and rainforest setting and theme, so through Design Consultations Modus and Douglas were able to collaborate on a solution. This included:

  • Vinyl graphics for aluminium composite external walls with rainforest palm imagery, directly blending with the nature surrounding it
  • Colour scheme chosen from the surrounding area, including Surfmist doors and roof with Woodland Grey trims, louvres, steelwork and verandah columns

Built for Cyclone and Coastal Conditions

Being in North Queensland in Region C, the building had to be engineered to AS/NZS1170.2 and therefore designed to resist corrosion and cyclones. Specifically, this included design solutions such as:

  • Colorbond Ultra finish across the Custom Orb roof sheeting, wall and roof trims and doors
  • All exposed steel hot-dip-galvanised with a 2 pack epoxy paint finish
  • Marine Grade 316 Stainless Steel hinges, indicator bolts and door closers
  • Class 3 fasteners in a painted finish matched to colour scheme
  • Aluminium for composite external cladding and aluminium battens, to resist corrosion
  • M12 threaded rods anchored into concrete pad to prevent uplift
  • Roof fixed with 14-gauge cyclonic tek screws with oversized gaskets

An Outstanding Result

After ten years of service, the failing automated Exeloo facility has been replaced with something designed and built for the setting and climate. A toilet building that is low-maintenance, long-lasting and with a great user-experience that the council and community can be proud of.
